When I was working on the roll-out of my poker tells video series in early 2015, I decided to write my own theme music for it. I play a little piano and thought the challenge would be fun. I just wanted a short few-second snippet of simple piano music to intro each of the videos.
You can hear the musical intro at the start of this short clip from one of my poker tells videos:
It probably doesn’t ring any bells for you. It’s admittedly pretty short/generic. But my inspiration was the theme song from the movie Rounders (Amazon link). The riff I referenced you can hear at the 16-second mark of the main Rounders theme song here:
The Rounders snippet was a bit more slow, obviously, and more tense with the minor instrumentation around it. I had a first version that was much more similar to that feel, slower and more tense, but decided to revise it after my wife said the vibe was a bit dark and depressing for people sitting down to watch some training videos. And she had a point. I did try to keep a little of the darkness in there, though.
